Jean Burg, a young pastor with a faith as pure as it is unshakeable, is appointed to a mountain village to replace Pastor Bouvier, a local man who was much loved by his parishioners. Jean Burg is obsessed with purity and divine punishment. His first sermon, uncompromising in tone, provokes hostile reactions among the villagers. The parishioners complain about him to the synod council. The young pastor is threatened with suspension for mental incapacity. Scared, Jean Burg tries to get closer to his flock.
